Sunflower Elementary School fifth-graders stood before peers and family members Thursday to make a pledge to stay drug free. The Paola-area students recently completed Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) classes and received certificates marking their achievement during an assembly Thursday. Paola police officers and D.A.R.E. instructors Dana Abbott and Adam Hale congratulated the students on their efforts and encouraged them to continue to work hard to achieve their goals. D.A.R.E. essay winners from each of the six fifth-grade classes read their winning essays during the assembly. Some of their comments included: “I will say no to all drugs,” “D.A.R.E. has taught me how to be drug free,” and “please don’t throw away your life by smoking or doing drugs.” The essay winners were Audrey Calore, Christina Thompson, Mackenzie Grandon, Tabitha Foster, Allyson Frizzell and Lexi Clark. “I wish each and every one of you the very best in where ever your life may take you,” Hale said.
