Local locksmith Curtis Wycoff has changed business locations. In case you need some lock work done, Wycoff now operates out of 20 S. Silver St., on the Paola Park Square. Previously, he was located at 211 N. Silver St.  Wycoff made the move at the first of the year, and he said he still has a few things left to move. “All of the locksmithing supplies are here though,” he said. Wycoff has been cutting keys since he was about 13 years old, but he has officially been in business for about 30 years, 14 of those in the Paola area. He got started as a young adult because of his father and grandfather — since the two had a Western Auto Store in Osawatomie. Wycoff was surrounded by key cutting growing up. The recent change in location was due to having a cheaper rent and hopefully, he said, cheaper utilities. “Last year was a struggle,” he said of the cost of operating his business. “It picked up a bit in December, but some days I found myself sitting here not doing anything. It got real tight.” He attributes some of the struggle not only to rent, but also to the down economy. However, the recent drop in temperature hasn’t helped much either with utility costs. “I thought about operating from home,” Wycoff said. He added he thought about running his business out of his barn, but he didn’t get it remodeled in time, and the building he’s currently in works just fine. He works all over Miami County, also covering parts of Linn County, and he said as far as he’s aware, he’s the only locksmith around. For the most part, he deals with residential areas, but he also works with commercial buildings and businesses, too. “I’ll do just about anything but opening up safes,” he added. “That gets a little expensive.”
