Business professionals, service organization representatives, food vendors, musical and dance performers and others will take center stage Saturday during the Kansas Day Expo sponsored by the Paola Chamber of Commerce. The free event is scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Paola National Guard Armory, 1010 Hedge Lane. The event will also feature a Kid’s Corral, in which Mary Asher will direct a number of children’s games and activities at no charge, according to a news release. The first Kansas Day observance is believed to have been held on January 29, 1877 at North School in Paola. History teacher LeGrande Alexander Copley is credited for initiating the first Kansas Day celebration by asking students to compile a list of questions about local history and by decorating his classroom with historical symbols associated with Kansas. He later promoted the event through the Kansas Teachers Association, according to a brochure for the event. On January 29, 2003, then Gov. Kathleen Sebelius signed a proclamation recognizing Paola as the birthplace of Kansas Day. State Sen. Robert Tyson, state Rep. Jene Vickrey and Miami County Commissioner Bill Butler joined Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger, former resident of Paola, at the governor’s proclamation signing ceremony, according to the brochure.
