The awards keep coming for the Paola High School track and field program, which captured the Class 4A boys’ state title in Wichita last spring.

Paola Panther coaches Mike Smith and Frank Perbeck were named coach and assistant coaches of the year.

Smith was named the Kansas Cross Country and Track and Field Coaches Association Class 4A track coach of the year.

Perbeck was selected the association’s throwing coach of the year.

Smith and Perbeck were honored during an awards presentation at the annual Kansas Cross Country and Track and Field Coaches Association clinic held in Junction City on Jan. 9.

“Being named coach of the year means the team had a successful year,” Smith said. “It is truly a team award, from the athletes to the assistant coaches. We were blessed to have great athletes who were hard working, talented and of high character. When you couple that with the outstanding and dedicated coaches we have, then success was bound to happen.

“Frank Perbeck winning the assistant COY award is very well deserving,” Smith said. “Winning the state title and other honors for our track program just speaks volumes about the type of kids and coaches we have here at Paola. Our kids are not afraid of hard work and competition. No doubt we will miss many of the athletes we had last season; they were exceptional.”

The Paola Panthers scored 66 points to run away with the state track and field championship. Mulvane was runner-up with 29 points and Pratt placed third with 36 points.
Joe Stephens led the Panthers with a gold-medal performance in the 300-meter hurdles and silver medals in the long jump and 110-meter high hurdles.

The title came after the Panthers had placed second and runner-up, losing state crowns by less than six points in the two previous years.

Luke Wilson won silver in the shot and the discus.

Antonio Smith placed second in the 200-meter dash.

Wil Cunningham was fourth in the triple jump.

The Panthers placed sixth in the 4x100-meter relay, seventh in the 4x400-meter relay and seventh in the 4x800-meter relay.
