BALDWIN CITY — The Paola High School Panther wrestling team placed two in the top four at the Baldwin Invitational on Saturday while the Spring Hill Broncos placed one.
Spencer Trumbly of Paola advanced to the 215-pound finals, losing to Taylor Wuthnow of Abilene by a pin in the title match. Trumbly opened the day with a  5-1 decision against Colton Bonner of Baldwin, notching his 20th win of the season.

Trumbly scored a 2-1 decision against Boomer Mays of Eudora. He then won a 10-2 major decision against Jacob Strickland of Oak Park. Trumbly advanced to the title match with a pin against Jonas Myers of Tonganoxie.

Spring Hill’s Shane Slyter placed third at 160 pounds. Slyter pinned Heath Parm-ley of Baldwin in the consolation finals. Slyter was 4-1 with three pins and an injury default.
Cale Karigan of Paola advanced to the consolation finals at 285 pounds. Karigan was pinned by Jesse Austin of Baldwin in the third-place match. Karigan was 2-2 with a pin and a 7-6 decision.

“It was a rough day for our varsity crew at the Baldwin Invitational,” Paola coach Russ Hermreck said. “We had some very tough matchups with some really good competition, but there certainly was a couple of bright spots.

“The biggest has to be Spencer Trumbly making the finals of the tournament and on his way beating a very tough opponent in Boomer Mays from Eudora. Spencer lost to Mays several times this season, and early in the season he listed beating Boomer as one of his personal goals on the season. Obviously, this is a huge victory for his confidence going into the last little stretch of our season.”

Karigan came within an eyelash of making it to the championship finals.

“Cale was a matter of seconds from being in the finals, losing in sudden victory overtime to a very good opponent from Oak Park, Mo., in the semifinals,” Hermreck said. “Cale just got a little careless and gave up a penalty point in the last couple of seconds to send the match into the first overtime. He should have won that match and been in the finals.”

Abilene won the 12-team tournament with 306 points. Oak Park was second with 297 points. Lansing placed fourth with 240.5 points.

Paola was 12th with 54 points. Prairie View placed fifth with 186.5 points. Spring Hill was eighth with 136 points.

The Panthers had several wrestlers step up and compete, but they were facing state-ranked wrestlers in their weight classes.

“Eric Timpe really stood out as someone who is making giant strides,” Hermreck said. “He wrestled and competed really well against two very tough opponents. Those two wrestlers are state medalists, and Eric stood in and went toe to toe, eventually getting beat. He has really stepped up his intensity in practice, and it is starting to show. “
