For two decades, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office sent inmates across Kansas due to overcrowding, but with a new facility, the process is changing. The opening of Phase II of the New Century Adult Detention Center has enough bed space for inmates in custody, according to a release from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. Over the past few years, the sheriff’s office has farmed out an average of 200 to 300 inmates per day, which cost the county an estimated $6 million per year. The new addition of the detention center was dedicated Sept. 18. Phase II includes 554 beds, which consist of 384 medium and minimum custody beds, 72 special-need beds, 50 for maximum security and 48 segregation beds. There are now a total of 1,087 in the Johnson County jail system, including 817 at New Century Jail. The Olathe Detention Center is now closed for remodeling, and staff has been reassigned to the New Century Adult Detention Center. Cost of remodeling will be about $25 million. Some of the upgrades are for technology, infrastructure, exterior and the enlarging of the booking, intake and classifications areas to accommodate more than 17,000 inmates booked annually. The Olathe Jail operated 24 hours a day, since opening in August 1998. The renovation is the largest since the facility opened.
