Holy Trinity Catholic School’s top spellers went head-to-head last week for the chance to move on to the Miami County spelling bee Friday.

The younger students took center stage first Jan. 26, as nine participants from first, second and third grade tackled words such as “duck,” “summer,” “phone” and “season.”
When all was said and done, third-grader Luke Johnson finished first, with third-grader Kalyn Bell taking second place.

Next it was time for 14 students from grades 4 to 8 to take their turn stepping up to the microphone and spelling words, while their classmates and family members watched from the audience. The top two spellers from that bunch would move on to the county bee.

Participants faced challenging words such as “terrible,” “cancel,” “octopus,” “strengthen” and “commentary.”

Sixth-grader Erin Timpe proved she’s a spelling superstar by finishing in first place, and seventh-grader Katie Thoden won a spell-off to claim second place and also secure a spot in the Miami County spelling bee.

The county bee is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Paola Middle School.
