Paola City Council members discussed several changes that may be made to Park Square’s lighting during the Jan. 26 meeting with Chamber of Commerce Director Carol Everhart.

Everhart gave a Chamber of Commerce annual report to members of the council, which she stated was an economic development report that included the lighting topic.
Council member Jack Rowlett Jr. specified there are currently three different lighting projects in the works that include the lights being replaced around the inner portion of the Square. The other two projects revolve around business owners on the Square discussing types of lighting they might want to see installed directly outside of their buildings and the Silver Street project.

Although a local resident will help with funding the light project around Park Square, Everhart stressed the importance of having grants to assist with the other projects.
Everhart’s report included the city’s economic development balance, profit and losses, a budget for the year 2010 and her own job description.

She specified work will continue on planning an entertainment mall in the city, as well as putting together a brochure for the city’s new housing incentive program to present at a Homeowners Association event in February.

In other business at the meeting:
Council members Jim Pritchard and Pete Bell discussed items from the invoice report with questions pertaining to certain purchases made.

Bell questioned the purchase of a $611.80 courtroom microphone, which is being used in the Justice Center. City Manager Jay Wieland said the recently purchased microphone improves the ability to record sound at court sessions that might be held there in the future. City Council meetings also may be televised in the near future, and Wieland added that the new sound equipment would assist with that. Bell said he was going to inquire about the cost of two firemen being sent to Ohio to inspect a fire truck that may be purchased for the city, but concluded that since the two were sent to inspect a $300,000 piece of equipment, he said he felt it was reasonable to send them.

Council members also:
Approved renewal of a caterers license for Evergreen Events, LLC.
Approved Appropriation Ordinance 670.

Opened a public hearing to consider a petition to vacate right-of-way in Block 9, Perry’s Addition to the city. The motion was approved to allow Applied Realty Solutions, LLC, requesting the vacation of a portion of the street right-of-way adjacent to the east line of Lot 1, Block 9, Perry’s Addition to the city. Owner of ARS Dave Moll plans to construct a sign at this location.

Approved to waive a $69 building permit fee for the Miami County Historical Museum to update electrical wiring and lighting in the basement to bring it up to certain current codes.

Discussed the disposal of city surplus equipment. Public Works Director Craig Browning said two of the four pieces of surplus equipment are broken down mowers that would cost too much to repair. An inmate bus that was used during the inmate program is also no longer being used. It was suggested that the bus be fixed up to use as a city tour bus for visitors. The last piece of surplus equipment is an old oil distributor that Browning said has not been used since he’s been with the city.

Bell expressed his concern with the low hours on the diesel mowers, since Browning stated both only have around 400 hours on them and added that one has a cracked head gasket, which would cost more to repair than Browning said he wanted the city to spend. When the mowers were in use, Browning said they were used to clean the grounds of cemeteries. Wieland added that he wasn’t sure if the city was getting their money’s worth out of the mowers it has on hand.

Droste also announced that council member Johna Dial didn’t refile for her city council seat in Ward 2. Former council member Gee Gee Wilhoite filed the necessary paperwork Tuesday, making her the only candidate for that ward. Incumbent council member Bell also filed his paperwork for ward 4, and resident Mark Minden also filed the necessary paperwork for the same ward — which will go to a vote at the April 6 election.
