The Golden Eagle soared its way to victory Saturday at Pack 3142’s annual pinewood derby, and 10-year-old Flynn Langner went along for the ride. Thanks to a couple of weeks worth of craftsmanship, along with some father-son bonding time between Flynn and his father, Dale, the sleek pinewood derby car dubbed the Golden Eagle was born. What an introduction it made Saturday to the pinewood racing circuit as the gold-colored wooden derby car consistently streaked down the elevated raceway and across the finish line ahead of its competitors. Flynn cheered on his handiwork Saturday with fist pumps and leaps of joy after the times for each race were displayed on a large computerized scoreboard at Holy Trinty Catholic School. He wasn’t the only one having fun, though, as 16 youths from Pack 3142 competed against each other Saturday. The derby cars were unique, with one sporting a sail and another painted in Indianapolis Colts colors just in time for the Super Bowl. Four parents also built derby cars and raced in an open class. None of the cars were allowed to weigh more than five ounces, but thanks to the work of the Golden Eagle, Flynn won himself a hefty trophy that weighed far more than that. Scouts were allowed to sit at the finish line when their derby car was racing, and they displayed a wide spectrum of emotions depending on how their racer fared. Thanks to a computer system operated by Cub master Chuck Trigg, there never was any doubt about the times. When all was said and done, Flynn took first place with an average time of 2.39 seconds and an average speed of 209.8 miles per hour. Nathan Trigg and his Hippiemobile finished second with an average time of 2.42 seconds and an average speed of 207.3 miles per hour. Tyler Fletcher and his Lego Racer finished third with an average time of 2.44 seconds and an average speed of 205.5 seconds. In the open class, Chris Fletcher edged out Chuck Trigg for parental bragging rights.
