IOLA — Nine members of the Spring Hill High School track and field team qualified for the Class 4A state meet in Wichita with their performances in regionals at Iola on Friday. The Spring Hill Lady Broncos won the 4x800-meter relay, claiming the regional event title with a time of 10 minutes, 8.07 seconds. Relay team members were Macy Carbajo, Kelsey Carbajo, Layne Gilliland, Ashley Schoenhofer, Kayla Stewart and Makaela Willis. “I have been in Spring Hill since 1991 and this is the most athletes we have sent in one year,” Spring Hill girls’ coach Brad Reinking said. “This is by far the most girls. The state track meet is the biggest spectacle in high school sports for the state of Kansas. It is fun to take athletes there and let them see what it is all about. The more the merrier.” Top four placers in each event qualify for the state meet. Sisters Macy and Kelsey Carbajo placed second and third in the 3,200-meter run. Macy was second, crossing the finish line in 12:28.28. Kelsey ran a time of 12:36.07 for third place. Jami Hodge had a tough day in the long jump, scratching in the preliminaries and failed to qualify what was one of her stronger events. Hodge used the frustration from the long jump to the triple jump and had a season-best in the event, leaping 34 feet, 9 inches to place second. “She had not hardly scratched all year, but had two scratches in prelims,” Reinking said. “We felt like the field judge did not give them proper time to warm-up between flights, that put a little twist in her warm up and threw her off. She did a great job of rebounding in the triple by jumping her best of the year as well.” The Spring Hill girls placed fourth in the 4x100-meter relay, qualifying for state with a time of 52.23. Relay team members are Gilliland, Hodge, Schoenhofer, Sharemet, Stewart and Willis. Spring Hill scored 40 points, placing sixth in the girls’ team standings. It was a great day for the Spring Hill, Reinking said. “Put it this way, everyone we took to the regional qualified,” Reinking said. “We made a few changes on the 4x800 and it really paid off. We thought they would have a pretty good chance, but they ran their best time by 30 seconds. A lot of the difference is that they ran from first place instead of the back of the pack the entire race. I think it made them more competitive. “The 4x100 ran their best time by a full second as well,” he added. “We were really pleased with their performance. The hand-offs were great. We were sitting in eighth place going into the race, they did a lot of things right to overcome those odds.” Mark Sherman cleared 6-0 in the high jump, placing third to qualify for state. He was the only Bronco to qualify for state on the boys side, scoring all six team points for Spring Hill in the meet. The Broncos were 12th in the team standings. “Mark has had the kind of senior season that you wish every one of your athletes could experience,” Spring Hill boys’ coach Brent Smitheran said. “He has medaled in every meet this season, broken our school record, won our league meet, and now qualified for the state meet. We are absolutely thrilled for Mark.” The Broncos has some personal records in the meet, but the regional competition was very tough, as it should be this time of the year, Smitheran said. “We did have a number of seasonal best marks on Friday, but unfortunately they were not good enough to qualify for state on that day,” Smitheran said. Other results for the Spring Hill girls were: 1,600-meter run: Schoenhofer, fifth, 5:48.34. 100-meter hurdles: Sharemet, seventh, 17.18. 4x400-meter relay: Spring Hill, eighth, 4:26.32. Relay team members are Gilliland, Hodge, Schoenhofer, Sharemet, Stewart and Willis. Long jump: Sharemet, seventh, 15-4.75; Hodge, 11th, 14-0.25. Triple jump: Sharemet, ninth, 32-2.5. Discus: Schoenhofer, fifth, 107-9. Other results for the Spring Hill boys were: 400-meter dash: Blaine Reinking, 13th, 1:01.00. 110-meter hurdles: John Dziadura, 11th, 20.17. 300-meter hurdles: Sherman, ninth, 44.86. 4x100-meter relay: Spring Hill, seventh, 48.47. Relay team members are Josh Albrecht, Zack Bergquest, Max Penichet, Ben Silk, Dziadura and Sherman. 4x400-meter relay: Spring Hill, 10th; 3:56.99. Team members are Albrecht, Bergquest, Penichet, Reinking, Sherman and Silk. Long jump: Sherman, ninth, 18-6; Silk, 11th, 16-11.75. Shot put: Josh Parsley, 11th, 38-1.25. Discus: Parsley, ninth, 113-7; Jesse Chadwick, 13th, 107-11. Javelin: Reinking, 12th, 102-0.
