PAOLA — There could be a lot of uses for an old bowling alley, but for Dave Roth there was only one perfect way to transform the building at 31933 Old Kansas City Road south of Paola into his dream.

Roth turned the open bowling alley area into an indoor archery range and transformed the office space into a spacious showroom filled with a variety of outdoor products. The end result was his new business — Roth Outdoors — which officially opened Aug. 21.

“We’ve had people come in and say they remember coming in here as kids and bowling,” Roth said.

Those who remember the building may not recognize the interior, though, as Roth and his employees have worked hard creating a lodge-themed showroom filled with fishing poles, lures, archery equipment, apparel and other outdoor items.

But the indoor archery range is what Roth is most excited about. For $10 a day, archery enthusiasts can practice their skills at the range rain or shine. Monthly shooting passes also are available, and Roth said they offer classes for those interested in learning about the sport.

Roth, who competes at archery events across the country, loves to talk about the sport. Fellow bow technician Hunter Thomas also shoots competitively, and that’s how the pair got to know each other. They are joined at the business by fellow bow technician and sales representative Ryan Gleghorn.

For those looking for a little competition themselves, Roth Outdoors is organizing a Fall Target Archery League for all skill levels and ages. Participants will be shooting a Vegas 450 Round on Tuesday nights starting Sept. 25 and running through Nov. 20.

It will be a handicapped league, and those who can’t make the entire schedule can drop in for $5 a night. Practice starts at 6:15 p.m., and the league starts at 7 p.m. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the league.

The business is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, as well as 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
