The Paola FFA farm business management team made up of (from left) Aaron Maxwell, Luke Elkinton, Ale Wright and Molly Kane recently won a state championship.

PAOLA — Paola FFA members had a strong showing during the state competition this year, with the farm business management team claiming a state championship.

A total of 23 members from the Paola FFA chapter traveled to Kansas State University to compete with other chapters from across the state during the competition May 5-7, according to a news release.

Several members placed in different categories, but the farm business management team of Aaron Maxwell, Luke Elkinton, Ale Wright and Molly Kane brought home the big prize by earning a state title.

“Paola was once again well represented, and we are excited to take another team to national competition,” adviser John Menefee said.

It’s the 12th time in Paola FFA history that a farm management team represented the community at state, and a Paola team in 1976 actually earned national honors. This year’s team is the 21st since 2005 to represent Paola FFA at the national convention, Menefee said.

The farm management event requires students to complete a 50-question test over economic principles, business structures, balance sheets, income statements and other agricultural business questions. In addition to the test, the team members have to complete a presentation over a case study they were provided with, Menefee said.

For the case study, they were required to complete an enterprise budget, balance sheet and determine how much money the business owner would need to borrow. This presentation was presented to a panel of judges and then scored.

This year’s farm management team members were also named champions at the following contests: East Central District, Fort Scott Aggie Days, Coffeyville Aggie Days, Allen County Aggie Days and NEO Aggie Days.
