Several small pieces of art are on display each year during the annual Heartland Art Guild International Miniature Paintings and Sculptures Art Show at the Miami County Historical Museum. This year’s show opens Monday, July 1.

The 15th annual Heartland Art Guild International Miniature Paintings & Sculptures Art Show exhibit is set to open July 1 and will continue to be on display until Aug. 2 at the Miami County Historical Museum in Paola.

The exhibit is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and the museum is located at 12 E. Peoria St.

None of the painting images can exceed 25 square inches, and none of the sculptures can exceed 6 inches in any direction, including the base.

This year’s juror is Michael Young, who currently lives in the Kansas City area. In 1978, Young moved from Kansas to New York City, where he studied at The Art Students League, Salmagundi Club and took private classes with Bill Weltman. Pat Carlson became his agent and his work was then represented by national publisher and gallery chain Dyansen.

In a national competition, Young was chosen to paint the 22-foot historical mural “Brown vs. the Board of Education,” which was completed in 2018 and hangs in the state Capitol in Topeka.

Best of Show and Merit Awards will receive cash prizes and ribbons. Those who visit the exhibit can also vote for a People’s Choice Award.

The awards will be presented during a reception from 1 to 3 p.m. July 13 at the museum, and a Paola Chamber of Commerce weekly coffee is scheduled to take place at 10 a.m. July 19 at the museum.
