JCPenney is helping the local 4-H youth group with science efforts through a grant program.

Brenda Smith, manager for the new JCPenney store at Corbin Park in Overland Park, presented a $5,000 JCPenney After-School Access Grant to the Johnson County Extension Office on March 5. The donation was a part of J.C. Penney Company’s mission to support youth development through after-school opportunities.
“The grant will be used to support the youth program’s science-based curriculum,” county Extension agent Kaitlyn Peine said.

The nonprofit organization was selected by Smith, who participated in 4-H activities while growing up in Ohio. Through the National 4-H Council and JCPenney, she partnered with Johnson County Extension’s 4-H and youth development programs.

From March 24 to April 6, the local youth program will benefit from the JCPenney After-School Round-Up. During the event, customers will be asked to round up their purchase totals to the nearest whole dollar. The funds collected from the effort go toward after-school programs for children.

The donations collected from the Corbin Park JCPenney store will be donated to the Johnson County 4-H youth program. Future dates are Aug. 4-17, Oct. 13-26 and Dec. 1-14.

The Corbin Park store is at 6901 W. 135th St., east of Metcalf Avenue.

Spring Hill USD 230 officials are working to involve patrons in discussions about the district’s budget.

A community forum about state funding and the 2010-11 budget has been scheduled by district officials, who will discuss possible cost-saving measures and revenue enhancements. Families, staff members and other community members are urged to attend the event.

The form — “The BIG Picture: A Look at the 2010-2011 School Budget” — will be at 7 p.m. March 29 in the Spring Hill High School Auditorium, 19701 Ridgeview Road.
The meeting originally was set to be at Hilltop Education Center in Olathe, but the location was changed due to anticipation of a large attendance.

After an interactive school budget presentation, attendees can use computers to operate the budget worksheet and try to balance the 2010-11 budget. According to a news release from the district, the interactive exercise will include making challenging choices about cost-saving and revenue-enhancing measures.

Public input will be used to prioritize budgetary ideas, which will assist Board of Education members with making decisions about finances.

Dalene Vencel recently was selected as the 2009 Officer of the Year by the Spring Hill Police Department.

Vencel is a 13-year veteran with the SHPD. She is also a field training officer, evidence custodian and master patrol officer for the department.

The award was presented by Police Chief Mitch Hofmann. “Dalene does an outstanding job for us,” he said. “She takes some of the younger officers in and kind of leads them along the way.”

She is one of three field training officers in the department.

“We wouldn’t know what to do without her,” he said. “She’s been a definite asset for our department.”

The Officer of the Year program was created in 2009. Hofmann said each officer was asked to vote on the award.
Some of the qualifications are based on integrity, character, job knowledge, dedication and willingness to assist others.

The Gathering Place opens in downtown PDF Print E-mail

After retiring as a travelling consultant with the National Education Association, Ron Daly spent his time at home with nothing to do.

In February, he saw a “For Sale” sign in the window of a vacant downtown location in Spring Hill.

“My life stopped, and I came up here and looked at it, and I bought it,” Daly said. “I sat around for five years doing nothing, and this came available.”

He’s been busy for the past six weeks renovating the building to establish one of the newest businesses in the community:  The Gathering Place, a rental facility. Daly knocked some of the plaster off the walls, which has a brick design as a result.

“I’m handy, and I can do a lot of these jobs and fixed it myself,” he said.

The aim is to provide a nice place where people can come together for a variety of occasions — everything from wedding parties and bridal showers to family reunions, holiday events and community affairs.

On Friday, Daly received his first clients.
