Carla Maureen (Platt) James, 63, died Dec. 8, 2012.

Carla was born Oct. 7, 1949, in Spring Hill to Robert and Annabelle Platt Pence. She married Larry. R. James on Dec. 7, 1984, in Topeka.

She attended Ottawa University, earning a degree in business administration.

She worked for Community Action from 1987 to 1997. She later worked as a finance manager for Topeka Independent Living Resource Center until she retired in 2010.

She was an active member of the Soroptimist International – Topeka, serving as president (2005-2010), vice president in 2004 and was currently serving as treasurer. She also served as chair of the Women’s Opportunity Award, Membership and Community Service Committees. She was instrumental in starting the SI-Topeka’s Feeding Families classes, which help low-income families learn basic cooking skills and was recognized as the SI-Topeka Member of the Year in 2002 and 2003.

She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend.

She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Robert Pence, and brother, Robert Platt.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Larry James; children, Randall and (stepchildren) Troy, Talya, Tara (Ashley), Trevin, (Misty), Trenton (Julie), Trevor (Crystal), Toiya and Todd; 29 grandchildren; a brother, Randall Platt; stepbrothers, Bruce Pence and Steve Pence; and stepsister, Cynthia Pence McLean (Fred).

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Church of the Nazarene, 1001 SW Buchanan St, Topeka.
