1949-2010
Mary J. Pearce Dillard, 60, died March 3, 2010, at the Olathe Medical Center.
Mary was born April 3, 1949, in Paola to James and Lillian Achey Pearce. She spent most of her life in Paola. On Nov. 24, 1967, she was united in marriage to Frank Dillard Jr. in Osawatomie. She was a CMA and worked at the local nursing homes for many years before failing health caused her to retire.
She enjoyed her family and friends, playing bingo, cards, dancing, cooking, watching TV game shows such as Deal or No Deal and Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Monk and visiting with family and friends on the telephone for hours. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Frank Dillard Jr.; brothers, Lloyd and Gary Pearce and sister Joann Facteau.

1916-2010
Verna Roselee Springer Durfee Bradshaw, 93, Osawatomie, died Jan. 9, 2010. 
She was born March 19, 1916, to William and Helen White Springer in Conway Springs, Kan. She was their only child, and after their divorce, she became the ward of her paternal grandparents. After their death, she attended nursing school in Winfield, Kan.
She married Richard F. Durfee in 1940, and they became the parents of a son, Richard Franklin Durfee Jr. They divorced in 1942. She moved to Osawatomie and worked in Kansas City, coming home on weekends.
She then went to work at the Sunflower Ordnance plant where she met William “Harry” Bradshaw. They married in 1947 and became the parents of a daughter, Joanne Lee, in 1948. Verna and Harry were active in Odd Fellows/Rebekahs.

1927-2010
Donald Dean Peckman, 82, Paola, died Feb. 25, 2010, at his home in the rural Block community.
Don was born Dec. 10, 1927, in the Block community to Carl and Ida Minden Peckman, He lived in the area his entire life.
On July 4, 1951, he was united in marriage to Pat Prothe in Paola before being shipped out with the Army to the Korean War. He served his country in the United States Army as a tank retriever until his honorable discharge.
He worked for Ted Crawford Budweiser Distributorship as an over-the-road truck driver, owned and operated the Phillips 66 Station in Paola, and while with the pipefitters union worked as a foreman for the construction of the La Cygne Power Plant. He retired from the Pipefitters Union No. 533 after many years of employment. After his retirement, he enjoyed working cattle on the family farm, feeding the honey bees, gardening, raising an orchard, woodworking, picking up walnuts, cutting wood and working with his hands.

1970-2010
James Matthew Frederick Bernard, 39, Paola, died March 5, 2010, at Olathe Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 22, 1970, in Kansas City, Kan., to James Edward and Mary Anne Heitmeyer Bernard.
He was a graduate of Bishop Ward High School in 1989.
He worked as a truck driver for the Pepsi Cola Co. He was an active member of Teamsters Local Union No. 955. He enjoyed spending time with his family, cooking alongside his son, and supported and attended all of his son’s sports activities.
He never met a stranger; he enjoyed talking and meeting new friends. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Paola.

1967-2010
Kevin Roy Sharp, 42, Overland Park, died March 3, 2010, at his home.
He was born July 5, 1967, in Kansas City, Mo., to Bertha Beth and Roy W. Sharp.
He was a finance director in the retail auto industry for more than 20 years. He was the father of three boys and an avid drummer and musician. He is survived by his mother, Bertha Mae Pierce; his three sons, Curtis, Ryan and Tyler Sharp of Paola; his siblings, Steven Roy, Kenny Harold, Christopher Allen, twin Keith Warren and sister Karen Morgan.
Services were Sunday. Arrangements are under the care of McGilley & Hoge Chapel, 8024 Santa Fe Dr., Overland Park, KS. In lieu of flowers. memorials may be made to the Kevin Sharp Memorial in care of the funeral home. |
