Members of the Paola Optimist Club met at the Paola Country Club on May 16.
Members present were Ron Sullivan, Bill Koelsch, Jim and Marilyn Gray, Becky Guilfoyle, Ronnie Sullivan, Joni Sondy, and John and Cherrie Kramer.
The meeting opened with the flag salute and prayer.
Minutes and financial reports were approved.
Bill Koelsch attended the district meeting in Wichita, where the state oratorical contest was held. The winner moves on to the next level in St. Louis, Mo. Bill also took the club’s donations for the three cancer camps to this meeting.
Discussion was held regarding the club’s 50th birthday celebration to be held Sept. 10, specifically menu and agenda.
“Kids Speak Out” oratorical contest for elementary kids will be held this fall, possibly in conjunction with the Veterans Day celebration at Sunflower Elementary.
Discussion was held regarding a booth at the fair this year.
There was discussion on nominating someone locally for the Bob Cutter Award from Kansas Optimist Clubs.
Ron will take care of the paperwork for this.
Oct. 5 is the Paola Police Department Fall Festival. The club will again participate in this. Last year the club gave away free hot dogs to those attending.
Club officers will remain the same for this coming year. The year starts in October.
The next meeting is Thursday, June 6, at the Paola Country Club
