Osawatomie-Paola places third in league swim meet

OSAWATOMIE — To place in the league swim meet, it would take a team effort from the Osawatomie-Paola girls.

Every member of the team delivered at league Wednesday, May 8, swimming personal records in at least one event.

This led Osawatomie-Paola to third place in the league meet.

“This is a very young team, and every swimmer had to score points for us to get third place,” Osawatome-Paola coach Gerri Hart said. “That happened and more.”

The league has eight very competitive swim teams, Hart said.

“It was an exciting league meet,” she said. “I am super proud for this team and the effort they have put in every day to get here. I hope they all work hard this summer and come back to swim.

“I cannot wait to see what this team can do in the next couple of years,” Hart said. “The turning point in the meet was the 500 free where we had three girls medal in the top eight. The rest of the team caught that fire and ran with it.”

Molly Kane won the 500 freestyle with a time of 6 minutes and 38.30 seconds, taking 11.97 seconds off her time. Alyssa Cole placed third in the event. Sydney Tewes was eighth.

Brayden Hanf, Iranzu Garrido Selah Hadel and Kane placed third in the 200 freestyle relay.

Alyssa Cole, Hanf, Hadle and Kane placed third in the 400 freestyle relay.

Hanf was third in the 50 freestyle. Garrido was seventh. Shyann Weymouth placed 19th in the event.

Hanf placed third in the 100 butterfly. Hadle was sixth. Maggie Cole placed eighth.

Kane placed fourth in the 200 individual medley. Maggie Cole was eighth. Brianne Damron placed eighth.

Alyssa Cole, Maggie Cole, Garrido and Tewes placed fifth in the 200 medley relay.

Hadle was fifth in the 200 freestyle. Emma Johnson placed 11th in the event. Brianna Shippy was 14th.

Alyssa Cole placed fifth in the 100 backstroke. Megan Cooke was 16th. Weymouth placed 19th.

Kylee Barnett placed 12th in the 100 freestyle. Shippy was 13th. Damron finished 15th.

Tewes was 14th in the 100 breaststroke. Johnbson placed 15th. Garrido was 16th.
