Kelsey Carbajo was praying for rain again. This time she didn’t need it on a Saturday afternoon to postpone regional cross country, but on a Friday morning as a little insurance that her grandfather would make her big day.
Carbajo, a Spring Hill senior, was signing a letter of intent to play volleyball and run track and field at Grand View College in Des Moines, Iowa.
Even though she thinks her grandfather, Gary Anderson, was just teasing, he said he was going to be golfing unless it rained.
“I think he just said that because he knew they were calling for rain this (Friday) morning,” she said.
Carbajo got the rain she wanted, just in case. She was not as lucky during the Class 4A regional cross country meet the last two years, when a conflict with the volleyball substate prevented her from running in the meet for a chance to compete at state.
Her volleyball teammates came before her personal goals of a state cross country medal. Those teammates came out for her Friday, joining classmates, friends, coaches and family to see her sign on the dotted line for not one sport, but two.

BALDWIN CITY — Jami Hodge, Meg Sharemet, Layne Gilliland and Kayla Stewart ran a time of 53.33 seconds for second place in the 4x100-meter relay in the Baldwin Invitational on Thursday, breaking the school record.
“Our relays ran well, with the 4x100 breaking the old school record of 53.8 and running a 53.33,” Spring Hill girls’ coach Brad Reinking said. “They have lots of room to improve as well, so we are hoping for great things out of them. The 4x400 relay just missed breaking the school record by 1 second, but I’m sure they will in an upcoming meet.”
The 4x400-meter relay was second in 4 minutes, 27.7 seconds.
Scoring 47 points, the Spring Hill High School girls’ track and field team placed sixth in the meet.
“The girls’ track team had a great day at Baldwin,” Reinking said. “This is the most points I can recall a girls’ team scoring in a varsity meet for Spring Hill since I have been here.”
Hodge won the long jump with a personal record leap of 16 feet, 5 inches. She placed fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 31-10.5.

Derrick Koehn has been running on the football field for years.
One of the leading receivers in the history of the Spring Hill High School Broncos’ football program walked Friday morning.
He walked into the school library and took a step toward making his dream of playing football at the collegiate level a reality, signing a national letter of intent to play for the Ottawa University Braves.
“It is something I have always wanted to do and now it is happening,” Koehn said. “I get an opportunity to go on after high school and keep playing.”
Koehn was all smiles during the ceremony, held before family and friends.
And, why not.

Advancing to the finals of the Class 4A substate tournament for the first time in seven years, the Spring Hill High School girls’ basketball program was rewarded with three selections to the All-Frontier League girls’ basketball team.
Sophomore guard Ericka Simpson headed the list on the first-team.
Senior Ashley Miller, a point guard, was a second-team selection for the Broncos.
Spring Hill forward Jami Hodge, a sophomore, and Paola guard Courtney Johnson, a junior, were honorable mention selections.
Spring Hill went 15-8 on the season, upsetting Fort Scott in the substate semifinals to advance to the championship game against Ottawa.
Johnson was a team-leader for the Paola Panther program, leading the team in scoring.
She was a team-player who made everyone around her better, Paola coach Stuart Ross said.
