Spring Hill girls win Class 5A soccer regional

SPRING HILL — The Lady Broncos soccer team defeated Shawnee Heights to claim their first Class 5A regional title.

Spring Hill won several Class 4A regional titles. The Lady Broncos are one game away from the state semifinals after losing a heartbreaker to Bishop Miege, 2-1, in the Class 4A regionals a year ago.

The Lady Broncos defeated Shawnee Heights in Spring Hill on Thursday, May 16 by a final score of 6-1.

Reagan Downes opened the scoring in the first half with an assist from team captain Mallory Smith.

Downes added another goal in the second half.

Five players scored in the regional victory for the Spring Hill Lady Broncos.

Grayson Murphy, Alexus Dillon, Jalyn Stevenson and Smith scored.

Courtney Costain, Kaylen Dawson, Madison Sandnes and Smith had assists.

Emery Mounce made three saves for the Lady Broncos.

Spring Hill improved to 13-5 with the victory.

The Lady Broncos will play St. James in the state quarterfinals at home Tuesday, May 21. The winner will advance to the state semifinals.

Spring Hill defeated Highland Park in the opening round of the playoffs, 10-0, on May 14.

Dawson scored a hat trick to lead the way.

Smith had two goals and three assists. She broke the all-time Frontier League assists record with 25 on the season. Sidney Cluck of Spring Hill had the previous record with 24 assists in 2014.

Brianna Russo, Dillon, Stevenson, Downes and Costin each had an assist.

Mounce posted the shutout in goal.
