SPRING HILL — The Lady Broncos held a one-goal lead at the end of the first half against St. James in the Class 5A state quarterfinals.
Spring Hill was stung by two goals in the final minutes of the half, giving St. James a 2-1 lead.
The Lady Broncos (13-6) ended up losing the playoff game 5-1 at Spring Hill High School on Tuesday, May 21. St. James went on to win the Class 5A state title.
Captain Mallory Smith opened the scoring for the Lady Broncos, beating the St. James keeper. Smith was taken down on the play, but from her view on the turf was able to watch the ball go into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Spring Hill caught a break in the first half when St. James kicked the ball over the goal on an empty net chance.
St. James scored twice in the final minutes of the first half and stole the momentum from Spring Hill.
The Lady Broncos, touted as a second-half team, had its chances in the early going. Spring Hill was simply unlucky, kicking one shot off the goal post.
St. James countered in the second half with three more goals to seal the 5-1 victory.
It was the second year in a row the Lady Broncos fell in the playoffs. Spring Hill fell to eventual state champion Bishop Miege in the Class 4A regional playoffs in a heartbreaker in overtime, 2-1. The Lady Broncos are one of the winningest teams in Kansas to not advance to state.
Smith scored the lone goal against St. James. Courtney Costain had the assist.
Playing in their final high school soccer game for Spring Hill were seniors Mallory Smith, Madison Sandnes, Emery Mounce and Morgan Dorley.
The Lady Broncos soccer team defeated Shawnee Heights to claim their first Class 5A regional title in Spring Hill on May 16 by a final score of 6-1.
Reagan Downes opened the scoring in the first half with an assist from team Smith.
Downes added another goal in the second half.
Grayson Murphy, Alexus Dillon, Jalyn Stevenson and Smith scored. Kaylen Dawson, Madison Sandnes, Costain and Smith had assists.
Emery Mounce made three saves for the Lady Broncos.
Spring Hill defeated Highland Park in the opening round of the playoffs, 10-0, on May 14.
Dawson scored a hat trick to lead the way. Smith had two goals and three assists.
