David Alfred Zimmerman age 86 of Paola, KS died Thursday October 24, 2024 at North Point Nursing Home.
David was born February 7, 1938 in La Cygne, KS. He was one of three children born to Roland Leonard and Mary Louise (Wilgus) Zimmerman. He grew up and attended school in Osawatomie. Where he graduated with the Osawatomie Class of 1956. After high school, David attended college in Pittsburg, KS for two years.
In 1959, David enlisted into the United States Navy at the Olathe Naval Station. For six years he was in the Navy. He then enlisted into the United States Airforce for 14 years. During this time, David was stationed all over the world at places such as Oklahoma, Thailand, South Carolina, California, Germany and Illinois. After 20 years of service, David retired from the Airforce as a Senior Master Sergeant.
On March 1, 1959, David and Mary Smith were united in marriage in Osawatomie, KS. To this union came two children Danny and Carol. The family traveled many places with David when he was in the military.
After David retired from the Airforce, he went to work for the United States Postal Service in Gardner, KS. He worked for USPS for 20 years until retirement.
David was a very patriotic man. He loved his country. In his spare time, David enjoyed woodworking, car shows, and Civil War reenactments. He loved to travel, especially to Hawaii. His family, grandchildren and great grandchildren were his greatest joy.
He was preceded in death by his son Danny Zimmerman, and his parents.
Survivors include his wife Mary of the home, daughter Carol Byard, son-in-law Jim Byard, grandchildren; Jennifer & Andy Brown, Lisa & Andy Kice, Lori Byard, and Cort & Jenn Byard. Great grandchildren; Christine & Anthony Jacquez, Jordan, Ally & Carter Brown, Memphis & Cash Kice and Noah & Abby Byard.
Service 10 am Thursday October 31, 2024 at Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home. Burial with military honors 9am Friday November 1, 2024 at Leavenworth National Cemetery. Memorials are to the Alzheimer’s Association send c/o Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home P.O. Box 430 Osawatomie, KS 66064.
